Neighborhood Walkability Assessment Tool

A key component of addressing the childhood obesity issue is finding ways to integrate more physical activity into the daily routines of children and families.  One of the easiest ways to integrate more physical activity is walking.  However, many people are concerned with the safety and walkability of our local neighborhoods and communities.  For this reason, CLOCC created the Neighborhood Walkability Assessment Tool.  The Neighborhood Walkability Assessment Tool is a resource available to any group, organization or school wanting to assess the walkability of their neighborhoods and then take action to fix the issues.

To help guide you through the process, we have included instructions that outline how to prepare for
a walkability assessment, how to run the activity, and resources for taking action in your community.  In addition, we have included resources such as sample letters, a glossary of terms, generic flyers
and more.

CLOCC hopes that you find the tool and its supporting documents useful in your communities. Please share the outcomes of your Neighborhood Walkability Assessment with us.  We would like to hear your success stories and best practices for increasing walkability in your neighborhood.  Please contact info@clocc.net for more information or to share your experiences.

Overview

Part 1

Part 1 of the tool helps you assess your neighborhood.  The group will look at sidewalks, street crossings, noise levels and more.  The goal is to determine what walkability issues you have in your community.

Part 2

Part 2 of the tool helps you figure out next steps for addressing walkability issues.  It will help you determine if you need to talk to your alderman or local officials, contact city departments, or if it something the group can address on its own.
